Water tank outlet 'drilled' or 'undrilled'?
Each tank comes with a outlet as standard. The plastic behind the outlet can be removed (‘drilled’) to allow the liquid to run out of the tank and through a tap if you have one fitted. It can also be left ‘undrilled’ which means it remains closed and the liquid cannot come out through this outlet. You may wish the outlet to be left undrilled if you plan to use the tank purely to store water, as an example.
It is possible to choose ‘drilled’ but purchase a ‘plug’ for the correct size outlet which will seal the outlet when required but allow for flexibility in the use of the outlet. Another option is to choose to have the tank ‘undrilled’ and remove the plastic yourself at a later date.
What water tank do I need?
Water Storage Tanks are used across many different industries, which can make purchasing the correct one a little daunting. The following guide may be useful to you – ‘What Water Storage Tank Do I Need?.
Still Unsure? We are always willing to help – just give us a call or contact us here.
Can I add extra inlets / outlets to the water tanks?
Yes. There are a number of options in which to do this;
- Fusion Sockets – These plastic welded fittings allow flexible positioning of inlets / outlets on plastic water storage tanks. To add this to your order, download the product drawing below and illustrate where you would like the fusion socket(s) placed. Details on how to mark the drawing can be found here. Most importantly, please reply to your order confirmation email with the drawing attached. View the full range of sizes available here.
- QJ® KwiQ Fit Fittings – This fitting is perfect for when internal access to the tank is not possible. This fitting has a unique gasket compression system and therefore requires external access only (there is no backnut to screw on inside the tank) which makes it ideal for the larger capacity tanks. Available in a wide variety of sizes and gradings (chemical/food/diesel/oil), it also has both male and female threads as standard for versatility. Fitting kits are available for a fuss-free installation. View the whole range here.
Can I view tanks before purchasing?
Unfortunately, viewing is not currently an option. However, collection of a purchased order direct from the factory is. If you wish to take up this option, get in touch and we can arrange this for you.
Is collection available?
Pre-arranged collection direct from the factory is an option. Get in touch if you wish to collect and we can send you an invoice with the items minus the shipping cost. Once paid, the order will be prepared and you will be notified via email when it is ready for collection.
I plan to transport the tank in a van. What tank may be best?
If you are transporting a large volume of water, it is advisable to use a Baffled Water Tanks for this application. Our Baffled Water Tank range starts from 190 Litres however when carrying 210 Litres or over, baffles become a legal requirement.
A Baffled Water Tank has pre-moulded internal walls or ridges called ‘baffles’ which helps to control the movement of the water in the tank during transportation of liquid. This also helps to improve the vehicle manoeuvrability and performance.
The size of tank required is completely dependent on the size of your vehicle and the set-up you require. It is important to take into account that 1 Litre of water = approx. 1kg. This means that when full, a water tank can add significant weight to your vehicle. Therefore your payload needs to be considered when purchasing a water tank for your van..
The most popular Baffled Water Tanks are as follows: 250 Litre upright, 350 Litre upright and the 400 Litre upright water tank. We do also have customers who prefer the larger tanks so this is also an option.
The Baffled Water Tanks are also suitable for use with water-fed poles.

What lid do I need?
Each Water Storage Tank comes with either a ‘Vented’ or a ‘Plain’ lid as standard.
A vented lid allows air to circulate within the tank, helping to control the pressure within it. A vented lid will be required in order to ensure flow of water from an outlet.. A vented lid is also important if you plan to attached a pump as without this, the pressure may cause a vacuum effect and the tank may deform. Often, this type of damage is not repairable.
A plain lid is purely for containing the water and stops air/debris getting into the tank. This is important if you wish to store drinking water.
See below for an example of either type (Note – the lid may look slightly different depending on what tank you are looking at. Please refer to the individual product for details).
In most instances, it is possible to swap a lid for an alternative but please contact us before ordering unless it is offered as an option on the product page.
Are there other colours available?
Yes, we are able to manufacture the majority of the Water Tank range in a wide variety of colours. You can view our Colour Chart page here.
Please note - not all colours are 'potable' so get in touch if you require this.
I wish to use my tank for saltwater. Is this suitable?
This is no problem, the only consideration you may wish to make when using saltwater is whether you would prefer to use a plastic outlet (know as a fusion) rather than the brass or nickel outlet that come as standard with the range. If this is the case, all you need to do is request that you tank comes 'undrilled' which will ensure a plastic 'wall' separates the metal fusion and the tank contents. The plastic fusion can be added almost anywhere on the tank. Just choose the fusion you require and add to your basket along with the tank. Once your order is placed, we will then in touch to discuss where you wish your plastic outlet to be placed. Alternatively, you can download the product drawing, mark this up and send it through with your order.
What is a Byelaw 30 kit?
The Byelaw 30 Kit is specifically used when connecting a tank to mains water supply. With an insect proof screened vent, as well as preventing backflow of the stored water into the main s(potable) supply, it helps to prevents contamination A Byelaw 30 Kit is required in order to conform to the Byelaw 30 Regulation as it helps to maintain the quality of the water in the tank.
What Does 'Potable' mean?
‘Potable’ is a term used to describe a tank suitable for storing water for human consumption. To be classified as potable, the plastic it is manufactured from must conform to the WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme). For more information on this, please visit the WRAS Approvals website here where they have an information titled ‘What is a WRAS Approval?’.
All our potable tanks adhere to these regulations. It will specify if a tank is potable in the Product Specification section on each product page.
How thick are the walls of the water tank?
The thickness of the plastic wall varies from 4mm to 9mm and is dependant on a number of factors such as the the size and shape of the tank. It can also vary throughout the tank due to the manufacturing method used and where modelling has defined additional strength is required. There is also a +/- 3% manufacturing tolerance to take into account.
Custom tanks can have thicker but these will only be manufactured for a bulk order due to the modifications required to the process.
Do I need a cage to support the water tank?
The Wydale tank range are built for strength and are therefore self-supporting. Unlike IBC tanks, they do not require a cage to support them when full.
How do I mount a water tank to my van?
We are unable to safely advise on specific fitting due to the variables involved. However, it is advised that when transporting a water tank, this is held in place by a frame that is attached to the vehicle chassis. A water tank when full can be very heavy so securing them in this way is the safest option.
Can I use the tanks to store chemicals?
Medium-density Polyethylene can be used with a wide range of chemicals due to its properties. However, it is recommended to check this against the material compatibility chart before purchasing. Call us or send us a message and we can check this for you.
