What is an above-ground rainwater harvesting tank?

Above-ground rainwater harvesting tanks are storage tanks installed above the soil surface to collect and store rainwater from roofs or hard surfaces. They are commonly used for garden irrigation, washdown, livestock watering, and other non-potable water uses.

What size rainwater tank do I need?

The right tank size depends on your water usage, roof catchment area and rainfall patterns. Smaller tanks (e.g., 500–1000 L) work well for gardens or small households, while larger capacities (2000L and above) suit bigger gardens, livestock use or households aiming to maximise rainwater capture.

What are the benefits of above-ground rainwater tanks?

Above-ground tanks are easier to install and maintain compared to underground systems, they are accessible for cleaning and inspection, and they don’t require excavation. They also allow you to see water levels at a glance and can be relocated if needed.

Can rainwater harvesting tanks supply drinking water?

Rainwater from above-ground tanks is typically used for non-potable applications (e.g., garden watering, flushing toilets, washing vehicles) unless you install appropriate filtration and UV treatment. Always check local regulations before using rainwater for drinking.

Do I need a pump with my rainwater tank?

Many installations benefit from a pump to ensure adequate water pressure, especially if using the stored rainwater for irrigation, garden taps or indoor fixtures. Submersible or booster pumps can be added depending on your setup and flow requirements.

How do I maintain my rainwater harvesting tank?

Maintenance includes: Regularly clearing gutters and leaf screens Checking inlet filters and first-flush diverters Inspecting tank walls and fittings for debris or algae Cleaning the tank interior periodically if needed

Are above-ground tanks suitable for freezing climates?

Yes - but tanks in colder climates should be frost-resistant and positioned so that the water outlet is protected from freezing. Insulated bases or placing the tank near a building can help reduce freezing risk.

What material should I choose for a rainwater tank?

Common materials include robust plastic/polyethylene and steel . Plastic tanks are corrosion-resistant and lightweight, while steel tanks can offer greater durability for larger installations. Your choice depends on capacity needs, site conditions and budget.

Do I need planning permission?

In many cases, above-ground tanks are permitted development, but requirements vary by location, size and proximity to buildings or boundaries. Always check local planning regulations before installation.

What accessories might I need with my rainwater tank?

Common accessories include: Rain-water diverters Leaf screens and gutter guards Pumps and pressure systems Tank stands or bases Overflow and connection kits
