Hosetails (Hose Tail Fittings)

Hose tail fittings are commonly known as hosetails and are used to connect flexible hose to a threaded outlet on tanks, pumps and pipework. The barbed ‘tail’ grips the inside of the hose to create a secure connection when used with a hose clip. Ideal for water transfer, irrigation, fuel and general fluid handling systems.

They are available in a range of thread sizes and hose diameters as well as plastic or brass materials.  Read More

Suitable for;

  • Water Storage Tanks
  • Pumps and transfer systems
  • Irrigation and garden supply
  • Rainwater harvesting setups
  • Agricultural; fluid systems.

Choosing the right hosetail

When selecting a hosetail fitting, match;

  • Thread size (e.g. 1/2″ BSP, 3/4″ BSP)
  • Thread type (Male or female)
  • Hose internal diameter (ID)

Fitting a hosetail

For a watertight seal, PTFE tape is recommended on all male BSP threaded fittings. The correct size hose clip should also be used to secure the hose to the tail.

Hosetails (Hose Tail Fittings) FAQs

Both are shown. For example:

3/4" BSP x 20mm hosetail

    • 3/4" BSP = thread size
    • 20mm = hose internal diameter (ID

No. BSP (British Standard Pipe) refers to the thread type, not the hose size. The hose size is usually shown in millimetres (mm).

A BSP fitting of 3/4" will not metrically measure 3/4" on a tape measure.

The majority of UK garden hoses have an internal diameter (ID) of 12 - 13mm so a 13mm hosetail should be correct. Always check your hose size before ordering.

Yes. For all male BSP threaded fittings, PTFE tape is the item that creates a watertight seal and will prevent leaks. At least 12 wraps are recommended by the manufacturer.

No. BSP and NPT are different thread standards and are not directly compatible. Using the wrong type can cause leaks.

Male BSP = external thread (screws into a fitting)

Female BSP = internal thread (fitting screws into it)

Hosetails are most commonly supplied with male BSP threads. If you need to connect a hose tail to a male thread, you may need a connector in order to do so.

The smaller the hose connection, the more the flow will be reduced. For a higher flow, choose the largest hose diameter your outlet can support.

eg. 1" BSP outlet commonly suits 25mm hose.
