Are your underslung tanks suitable for drinking water?
Yes. The underslung tanks we supply are manufactured from food-grade polyethylene, making them suitable for potable (drinking) water when properly maintained. We always recommend regular cleaning and sanitising to keep your water system safe and hygienic.
How do I choose the right size underslung tank?
Choosing the right size depends on:
- How many people are travelling
- How long you plan to stay off-grid
- Your vehicle’s available space
- Your remaining payload capacity
As a general guide, 1 litre of water weighs 1kg. A 70L tank will add approximately 70kg when full, so always factor this into your vehicle’s weight limits.
How are underslung water tanks filled?
Most installations use an external filler point mounted on the side of the van. The tank is then filled using a potable water hose from a campsite or mains tap. Some setups may also include direct gravity fill options or pump-fed systems depending on the layout.
Can underslung tanks freeze in winter?
Because underslung tanks are mounted outside the insulated living area, they are more exposed to cold weather. In freezing conditions, we recommend draining the tank and pipework or installing insulation and heating solutions to protect your system.
Are underslung tanks difficult to install?
Installation varies depending on your vehicle and mechanical ability. Tanks must be securely mounted to suitable structural points on the chassis and properly plumbed into your water system. If you are unsure, we recommend professional installation to ensure safety and long-term reliability.
Do underslung tanks affect driving performance?
Underslung tanks are positioned low on the vehicle, which can help maintain a lower centre of gravity compared to interior-mounted tanks. However, the added water weight will affect overall vehicle load, so correct weight distribution is important.
Do I need a separate grey water tank?
Yes. A separate grey water tank is recommended to collect wastewater from sinks and showers. This helps you comply with campsite regulations and allows responsible disposal at designated waste points.
How do I maintain my underslung water tank?
For best performance:
- Drain the tank if the vehicle is stored for long periods
- Clean and sanitise the system periodically
- Check fittings and mounting brackets regularly
Inspect pipework for leaks or wear, routine maintenance will extend the life of your tank and water system.
