A guide, not a quote. We size the tank to hold about 18 days of water, the standard UK method (BS 8515). For homes it's based on whichever is smaller: the rain your roof collects or the water you'll use. For farms and businesses it's based on the rain collected. Rainfall figures are typical averages for your region.

How it works

1

Rain hits the roof

About 80% of the rain on a pitched roof runs into the gutters.

2

A diverter filters it

A downpipe diverter or filter kit sends clean water to the tank and keeps leaves out.

3

The tank stores it

Dark tanks stop algae growing. When it's full, the extra overflows to the drain.

4

You use it

From a tap for the garden, or pumped to toilets and the washing machine.

About rainwater harvesting

Rainwater harvesting means collecting the rain that falls on your roof, storing it in a tank and using it instead of mains water. It cuts water bills, saves treated water for drinking, and takes pressure off drains in heavy rain.

Rainwater is ideal for watering gardens and crops, flushing toilets, washing machines, washing cars and machinery, and filling livestock troughs. It isn't safe to drink without proper treatment.

Roughly: roof area × yearly rainfall × 0.8 gives the litres you can collect. A tank of about 5% of that, or of what you use if that's less, gives around 18 days of storage. The calculator at the top of this page does the sums for you.

Yes. You need a pumped system with a filter, and the rainwater pipes must be kept separate from your drinking water supply and clearly labelled. Our complete systems include the pump and filter.

Above ground tanks are cheaper and easy to fit. Underground tanks cost more to install but free up space and keep the water cool and dark, which suits larger whole-house systems.

Water butts and garden tanks normally don't. Larger underground systems and new plumbing can involve building and water regulations, so check with your local authority or installer.

Yes. Tank joining kits connect tanks side by side, which is handy when one big tank won't fit.

Not without proper treatment. For drinking water, see our potable water tanks.

Rainwater Harvesting Information

Rainwater Harvesting Water Tanks. ‘Rainwater harvesting’ is a term used for the collection, storing and distribution of rainwater for a wide range of uses both commercially and domestically.

Collecting water in this way allows the re-use of a valuable resource therefore reducing demand on a mains supply.

Examples of what rainwater can be used for include;

  • Flushing toilets
  • Washing clothes in washing machines
  • Plant watering
  • Washing your car

How Do Rainwater Harvesting Water Tanks Work?

Most water tanks for rainwater collection have a number of common features such as;

  • An inlet for the rainwater to flow into
  • A filter to remove debris
  • Overflow
  • Outlet

Consequently, the simplest form of rainwater harvesting is to collect rainwater in a Water Butt through connection to an external guttering downpipe. This is an ideal solution in a domestic setting as a Garden Rainwater Tank.

To illustrate how these systems work, Enduramaxx have created a very useful animation of a Rainwater Tank in action.

What types of Rainwater Collection Tanks are there?

Water Butts Typically found in a garden, a water butt is an ideal size for domestic purposes. Primarily designed to connect to residential or outbuilding downpipes, they are easy to set up and install. Rainwater collected by your water butt can be used to water your garden, therefore offering an instant saving on your water bill and reducing your demand on the mains supply.

Above ground Rainwater Tank The most common type of tank for this purpose. The tanks can be sited next to the downpipe/guttering they are collecting water from. A wide range of capacities are available, up to 30,000 Litres. Suitable for domestic and commercial applications, the tanks can also be joined together for additional capacity. Various shapes of tank are available - from rectangular rainwater tank above ground tanks to round tanks. Are you restricted on space and can't find what you are looking for? Get in touch with the dimensions you have here.

Underground Rainwater Tank Useful for when space is limited above ground, an underground storage tank is a great space saver. Ideal to install during a new build development to promote its green credentials. Our range also includes an underground water tank system that only requires a shallow excavation - view here.

Rainwater Tank Systems In the same way as the tanks above, the rainwater systems offer a rainwater storage solution but with the additional benefit of a pumped outlet and filter within the tank itself. As a result, the system comes ready to fit.

What accessories do I need?

Rainwater Tank Filters Without appropriate filtering, leaves and debris can enter a rainwater tank and consequently cause blockages. In addition, dirt can collect at the bottom of the tank. The rainwater tank filters help to remove leaves and debris before it has a chance to enter the tank. These filter kits are ideal for the larger capacity tanks where access for regular cleaning is limited.

Tank Joining Kits Looking for additional capacity? Our tank joining kits will allow a number of tanks to be connected, therefore doubling your rainwater collection capacity.

Additional outlets These outlet kits mean additional water tank outlets can be added where required. This is particularly useful if you wish to add an additional outlet for a tap, as an example.
