How Do Rainwater Harvesting Water Tanks Work?

Most water tanks for rainwater collection have a number of common features such as;

• An inlet for the rainwater to flow into
• A filter to remove debris
• Overflow
• Outlet

Consequently, the simplest form of rainwater harvesting is to collect rainwater in a Water Butt through connection to an external guttering downpipe. This is an ideal solution in a domestic setting as a Garden Rainwater Tank.

What types of Rainwater Collection Tanks are there?

Water Butts Typically found in a garden, a water butt is an ideal size for domestic purposes. Primarily designed to connect to residential or outbuilding downpipes, they are easy to set up and install. Rainwater collected by your water butt can be used to water your garden, therefore offering an instant saving on your water bill and reducing your demand on the mains supply.

Above ground Rainwater Tank The most common type of tank for this purpose. The tanks can be sited next to the downpipe/guttering they are collecting water from. A wide range of capacities are available, up to 30,000 Litres. Suitable for domestic and commercial applications, the tanks can also be joined together for additional capacity. Underground Rainwater Tank Useful for when space is limited above ground, an underground storage tank is a great space saver. What accessories do I need?

Rainwater Tank Filters Without appropriate filtering, leaves and debris can enter a rainwater tank and consequently cause blockages. In addition, dirt can collect at the bottom of the tank. The rainwater tank filters help to remove leaves and debris before it has a chance to enter the tank. These filter kits are ideal for the larger capacity tanks where access for regular cleaning is limited.
